How are solar panels installed?

Solar panels are installed over one to two days by an MCS-certified team. They put up scaffolding, fix mounting rails to your rafters, clamp the panels on, fit the inverter (and battery if chosen), wire it into your consumer unit, then test and commission the system. After install, the system is registered with your network operator and you receive your MCS certificate.

The installation steps

  • Scaffolding goes up for safe roof access.
  • Mounting rails are fixed securely to the roof structure.
  • Panels are clamped to the rails and connected in strings.
  • The inverter and any battery are mounted, often in a loft or utility space.
  • Wiring is run to the consumer unit and isolators are fitted.
  • The system is tested, commissioned and registered; you get your paperwork.

What you need to do

Very little. Clear access to the loft and consumer unit, and be available for the brief commissioning handover. Your installer handles the DNO notification and MCS certification. A roof survey before the install confirms the design and final price.

Frequently asked questions

Will installers need to come inside?
Yes, briefly, to fit the inverter and connect to your consumer unit, usually in a loft, garage or utility area.
Is the power off during installation?
There may be a short interruption when the system is connected to your consumer unit, but most of the work happens with power on.
