Do you need a smart meter for solar panels?

You do not need a smart meter to generate and use solar electricity, but you do need one to be paid for the energy you export under the Smart Export Guarantee. A smart meter measures your export accurately so your SEG supplier can pay you, so it is worth arranging one if you do not already have it.

What the smart meter does for solar

  • Measures the electricity you export to the grid, half-hourly.
  • Lets your SEG supplier pay you accurately for export.
  • Enables time-of-use tariffs that pair well with a battery or EV.
  • Is free to install through your energy supplier.

Getting one fitted

If you do not have a smart meter, ask your energy supplier to install one, ideally before or soon after your solar goes live, so you can start claiming export income. Without one, you can still use your solar, you simply cannot be paid for export.

Frequently asked questions
